A “Before” of Our Chair for IFDA’S Take A Seat Design Exhibition

Apr 18, 2013

This is a sponsored post in collaboration with Donghia.  Founded in 1959, Donghia collections include textiles, wallcoverings, case pieces, accessories, and upholstery.

In yesterday’s postTina Ramchandani of Life in Sketch and I happily announced that we’ve teamed up together to upcycle a chair for the first ever IFDA Take a Seat International Design Exhibition to benefit Japan Tsunami Relief and Hurricane Sandy Relief.  The design industry is based on the idea of home and living environments. There is no better use of our talents than to reach out to those whose homes and environments have been devastated by these recent natural disasters, and to have fun doing it!

Once Tina and I entered Take A Seat, our first mission was to find a chair!  After searching everywhere, from street corners to flea markets, Donghia, one of our favorite New York showrooms, came to our rescue and generously donated the sleek, vintage-1970s-style chair pictured below.  Doesn’t it look ready for some love?  This curvaceous chair has a cantilevered seat, a mirror-polished chrome base, and a rounded tub shape – it will be a gorgeous accent chair when we’re through with our T.A.S transformation.

To help us with the actual transformation, our friend and upholsterer, Frank of Home Interiors by Anthony Giaramita has generously donated his labor to help us reupholster our chair.  If you follow Home Interiors on facebook you know how much he’s already done to help victims of Hurricane Sandy in these past months. Frank has been been amazing: donating his time, energy, and much more.

Now stay tuned for tomorrow’s post where we’ll go behind the scenes to show us shopping for the perfect fabric for this chair. I’ll give you a hint: it’s patterned and textured… what could it be?  In the meantime, browse some of the patterns and prints I like to pull inspiration from by taking a look at my Play With Patterns and Prints moodboard.

We are so happy, again, to be a part of this Sandy and Tsunami relief effort, and so thankful for Donghia and Home Interiors’ generous donations to make this possible.  Thank you!
